Encouraging children to foster a life long love of reading and learning is a precious gift that will help your child throughout their life.

 

Babies and Preschoolers

Board Books are a good introduction to books for babies. Simple colours and shapes will delight them and engaging in a shared exercise together with an adult is one of the first steps in communication. As babies develop into toddlers and preschoolers more sophisticated picture books can be introduced and they will have their own special favourites that they will want you to read over and over again. Don't only read picture books explore the shelves; non-fiction, poems, nursery rhymes are available for under 5's.

 

School Aged Children

The Beginner Reader collection offers educational readers for children just beginning to read. They are purchased from a variety of publishers and are written as an educational tool.  Include picture books in your reading as these can be used to the same end. Once children have mastered beginner readers the next stage is the transitional stage in reading and these books can be found in the Junior Fiction and Junior Paperback collection.  The non fiction collection is a valuable resource that can be used to answer homework questions or explain questions that children often ask you. When a child is investigating a topic at school these books can be used as a home supplement to the teaching program.  A small collection of Italian Picture books are available for loan.

 

There are a variety of formats to explore at the library.

CD's and Talking Books - There is a collection of contemporary fiction of talking books on cd;very popular for use in the car.  This is a broad range of music and rhymes for children aged 0 to 13 years.

DVDs and CD Roms are available for loan and also for use in the library. This technology is great for children to interact with and share with their parents.

Toys -A range of educational toys are available for loan these include puzzles, construction toys, games and roleplay toys and due to popularity only two may be borrowed per borrower.

 

HSC Collection 

Leichhardt and Balmain Library have an extensive collection of Study guides and texts to assist students studying for the HSC.

 

Teenage Fiction

This collection is aimed towards teenagers to relax, inform and amuse.
