Wall2Wall Mural Competition

Leichhardt Council undertakes a range of mural projects in order to improve our local area, and highlight the contribution that artists are making to our public spaces.

Finalists' Announced

Congratulations to this year's finalists. As ever it was a tough year for the judges with many well considered entries from talented artists across Sydney. The judges' job was to chose the designs which demonstrated the best fit with the site, and that would offer the community an invigorating aesthetic experience. All entries are carefully considered and assessed against specific competition criteria. These criteria are in the guidelines, so it's really important for entrants to read them thoroughly. Thanks to everyone who did enter. It was a pleasure viewing all the entries.

The 2012 Wall2Wall finalists are:

Site 1 - Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre, Lilyfield - Anna Gareeva

Site 2 - White Creek Park, Lilyfield - Alex Grilanc & Janne Birkner

Site 3 - 36th Battalion Park, Leichhardt - Tim de Haan

Site 4 - Mansfield Street, Rozelle - Helen Proctor

Our finalists will be painting their designs over the next month, before before assessed again by the judges who will determine who is awarded the first and second places in the competition. At the moment everyone sits at equal 3rd.

Background

Wall 2 Wall is a fantastic mural competition for artists, who are particularly interested in site specific design. That means that you will need to come up with a design that relates to a particular site, by acknowledging something interesting about the site. For example, you could do this by creating a design that speaks of the historical use of the site, or of contemporary uses, or even the flora or fauna of the area. It's up to you how you connect your design to the site. This sort of site responsiveness, evokes designs that connect to a location in a meaningful way, to reveal a fresh, and sometimes forgotten layer of knowledge about the site.

In previous years we have chosen designs for our walls that vary in style from urban or street art style to a more intimate and gentle landscape style. What was important for the judges was a clear indication that the designs responded sensitively to each individual site on offer. It was also very important that the entries were complex designs which reduces the chance of the works being vandalised.

This year we have 4 large walls available for 4 artists, in high profile locations in the Leichhardt local government area. All materials are provided for the installation of artworks by finalists, with cash prizes to be won. Artist teams also encouraged to apply.

PRIZES

1st = $2,500

2nd = $1,500

Equal 3rd x 2   = $750

This is an ideal promotional opportunity for artists, and allows you to develop your skills in creating art for public space.

Also, instead of working away in the quiet of your studio space, you will be able work in the hustle and bustle of the urban

landscape, with direct contact  with the community. All artists involved in out LikeArt projects have reported that the local

community have been supportive of their efforts, so get involved, and if you are chosen as one of our four finalists, you

can soak up the well earned support. You deserve it!
