Safety

Council is committed to making the Leichhardt area a safe and enjoyable place to live and visit. The first step to achieving this goal is to identify any potential dangers before they occur and put measures in place to prevent them from happening. This section will look at the ways in which Council is working towards safer roads and a safer community and also the part you can play to achieve this.

Crime-resistant communities care about the crime being committed and take steps to apprehend people that commit crime. But that’s only the beginning. They also look at ways to limit tempting opportunities for criminals by improving security, lighting and employing safe design principals in town planning and architecture. They can play a big part in preventing people becoming involved in crime in the first place, by providing effective support to elements of the community under stress. Many crime prevention strategies target `youth-at-risk’, offering educational and recreational opportunities to help needy young people stay on track. Others look at consolidating community cultural centres or providing training for families of parents with mental health issues. The Leichhardt Council Crime Prevention Plan 2004 identifies how Council and the community work together to reduce crime and promote community safety.
