Parking

Parking in the Leichhardt Municipality

Parking in the Leichhardt Municipality is a difficult issue for Leichhardt Council to manage. The competition for on-street parking spaces is high, particularly in the 3 main business Centres of Leichhardt, Balmain and Rozelle. Residents who live in areas close to these business Centres or traffic hubs (such as ferry wharves or bus terminus) are significantly disadvantaged if they do not have off-street parking.

Leichhardt Council has established a range of measures to ensure that the availablility of on-street parking is as fair and equitable as possible for all residents, businesses and visitors.

Free Off Street Parking

Leichhardt Council provides a number of free off-street parking spaces in the main business areas of Leichhardt, Balmain and Rozelle. All off-street parking spaces provided by Council are free 8am to 6pm, 7 days a week but have a maximum stay of 2 hours. For more information, click on the link above.

Permit Parking Scheme

A Permit Parking Scheme (PPS) is used by Council to manage the availability of on-street parking spaces in a given area. It allows for the conversion of unrestricted on-street parking spaces into areas with exemptions for authorised residents and businesses. For more information, click on the link above.

Parking Fines

Leichhardt Council also understands that a person who has received a parking infringement may believe for whatever reason that this infringement was issued incorrectly or unfairly. For more information regarding the process of appealing a parking fine, click on the link above.

Car Share Parking

Council has introduced a number of on-street and off-street ‘Car Share’ parking spaces in the municipality. A ‘Car Share’ facility provides the community a cheaper option to utilise a vehicle without owning it. Click on the above link to find out where they are located.

Narrow Streets Parking

Council is currently developing a strategy to deal with the competing issues of pedestrian access, parking in narrow streets and compliance with the Road Rules. For more information on narrow streets parking, click on the link above.
