Jan Preston's Boogie Circus (with special guest Margeaux Rolleston)
Known as Australia’s Queen of Boogie Piano, Jan Preston has a reputation as an astonishing piano player with a rich resonant voice who is a magnetic live performer.
Jan captivates, moves and uplifts audiences around the world with her original songs, compositions and her mastery of boogie woogie. ABC Music’s Winner of 5 Music Awards for her CDs and soundtracks, she plays festivals and concerts throughout Australia, NZ and Europe, tours her own shows (Productions), writes music for film and TV, and composes and performs for Silent Movies. Joining Jan at Bluesfest 2016 will be the sultry voice of local Annandale resident Margeaux Rolleston.
Unashamed bluegrass sinners, The Pigs, have been spreading their supercharged hillbilly pop around Australia and the world for over 12 years. Their ability to turn hit pop songs into downright foot-stompers is legendary and their kooky original anthems like Macho Moisturiser and Hey Christina are sung from Berlin to Bendigo. Following three celebrated albums, international tours, Golden Guitar nominations and a trip to the dentist, 2015 saw the release of their iconic Aussie album, 'The Pigs Home Brew' and the crazy national tour that ensued, including major festivals, regional theatres and TV appearances - even singing “Ita” to Ita Buttrose (she loved their shiny teeth)! This family, last name ‘Pig’, bring their good looks and hillbilly bluegrass sounds to Leichhardt Council’s Bluesfest in 2016.
Mental As Anything
Mental As Anything started off as students who put a band together to play blues, sixties pop, rockabilly, country and increasingly their own original compositions to fillin time at art school in Sydney Australia in the mid 1970s. Initially playing to students at parties pubs and Uni dances they caught the attention of new independent label Regular Records who in late 1978 sold out 1300 copies in a fortnight of the three track vinyl "Mental As Anything Plays At Your Party" with one track: "The Nips Are Getting Bigger" on everyone's radio over Christmas. Mental As Anything with their two original lead vocalists Martin Plaza and Greedy Smith have been touring since the late 1970s honing the craft of performing their songs live and perfecting the art of just being Mental. Bring a picnic to this Free event on Sunday 10 April @ War Memorial Park.
