1.             Godden Mackay Logan Heritage Consultants

Review of Leichhardt Municipality Heritage Conservation Areas January 2004

Known as Leichhardt Heritage Review: Stage 2 Report

Contents:

This report provides important and useful background historical information and statements of heritage significance for most of the existing heritage conservation areas within the Leichhardt Local Government Area. The report does not include information about the Callan Park Heritage Conservation Area. The report also includes potential additional heritage conservation areas or recommended boundary changes to existing heritage conservation areas that were subsequently included within a draft Local Environmental Plan. The implementation of that draft plan was deferred, pending the finalisation of other relevant heritage studies. Accordingly, further work on that plan is still pending. This study also recommended changes to the heritage provisions within Council's Local Environmental Plan. This work has now been superseded by new planning laws from the State Government, accordingly, that information has not been provided below. Should you wish to see that information, please contact Council's part-time Heritage Planner, Christopher Reeves (details provided below).

Purpose:

Godden Mackay Logan Heritage Consultants were engaged by Council to review the existing heritage conservation areas within the Leichhardt Local Government Area. The need for the review arose from concerns that some of the existing heritage conservation areas were large and diverse and it was difficult to understand and manage these areas. This had proved to be a problem for the public and Council Officers, hence the need to more tightly define their heritage values. This study also took the approach that the heritage conservation areas within the Leichhardt Municipality were best defined by the land holdings at the point of subdivision, because the street and lot pattern and the date of subdivision has tended to determine the type and style of house and the development patterns that followed. This also helps to explain the differences in character that occur throughout the Leichhardt LGA.
