Graffiti Management

Leichhardt Council is committed to mitigating the effects of illegal graffiti on our community.

Graffiti Management Policy

The Graffiti Management Policy was adopted in March 2010.

A major focus of the policy will be to expand our community's understanding of best practice methods

for graffiti management with a focus on planning, design, protection and removal.

Maintaining the aesthetically pleasing ambience of our streetscapes is a priority, which will allow

us all to enjoy a locality that is cared for, and feels safe for all who work, live and visit it.

  • Graffiti is removed as part of Council's regular infrastructure service provision, with a focus on highly visible

       and highly tagged spaces.

  • Council provides free graffiti removal kits to residents to remove graffiti from private premises. Council also

provides advice to residents on how to reduce the likelihood of graffiti incidences on their property.

  • Council invests in community and cultural development programs aimed at minimising the potential for graffiti to

occur, while enhancing public space through art programs.

The Graffiti Management Policy has been developed utilising evidence-based research undertaken in Leichhardt,

with reference to wider studies. These research programs include the LikeArt strategy, involving artists in the

development of large works in public places. The Policy demonstrates Council’s commitment to reducing the

financial cost of graffiti to the community while building community capacity.

Graffiti management is an issue we all need to work on together. By developing innovative networks between

Council and local utilities, businesses and residents, we can make sure the beauty of our homes, businesses and

historical gems are well looked after for everyone to enjoy.

Reporting Graffiti

We encourage the community to report graffiti to the Police Assistance Line as this helps

government bodies develop a true picture of the effects of illegal graffiti. Also, before issueing our

free graffiti removal kits, we will ask you for the reference number issued to you by the Police Assistance

Line when you report illegal graffiti.
