If the answer is yes you may be interested in attending the Environment and Recreation Committee. The Environment and Recreation Committee is your chance to become actively involved in the decisions that Council makes regarding the local environment and recreational issues. The Environment and Recreation Committee allows you to provide feedback to Council on environmental and recreation strategy positions and projects.
What is the Environment and Recreation Committee?
The Environment and Recreation Committee is a committee of Leichhardt Council that focuses on policy and projects that are predominantly related to environment and recreation in Leichhardt in Leichhardt Council area. The following Terms of Reference guide the matters that are dealt with tby the committee. The Environment and Recreation Committee, being guided by the principles of ecologically sustainable development and maximising local passive and active recreation opportunities, deals with, but will not be limited to, the following:
Environment Policy development on:
- Council's Sustainability Strategy
- Environmental health
- Waste minimisation and resource recovery
- Stormwater management
- Corporate Sustainability
- Trees and open space
- Landscaping
- Environmental education
- Pollution monitoring
- Biodiversity conservation and enhancement
Recreation Policy development on: - Open space plans of management and masterplans
- Management of companion animals in open space
- Management and provision of open space, including small parks and sport fields
- Management and provision of recreational facilities
- Provision of recreational programs and services
How does the Environment and Recreation Committee function?
The Environment and Recreation Committee is Chaired by elected Councillor Rochelle Porteous and the Deputy Chairperson is Councillor Michele McKenzie. The Environment & Recreation Committee is made up of 6 Councillors and numerous community representatives. The Environment & Recreation Committee reports directly to full Council, where recommendations from the Committee are considered for endorsement.

The Environnment & Recreation Committee is attended by interested local residents, volunteers, school teachers, business operators, sports clubs and many more.
What topics are discussed and reported to the Environment Committee and Recreation?
Over the last year the Environment Committee has discussed Council's Cities for Climate Protection Program, the State of the Environment Report, the 10 year Environment Strategy Review, Whites Creek Wetland and a new recycling system. The newly formed Environment and Recreation committee provides a forum to discuss environment topics such as those outlined above, as well as recreation topics, such as parks Plans of Management and masterplans, recreational services and programs, recreational events, provision and management of open space, and annual allocation of active open space to sports clubs and schools.
