Databases

Leichhardt and Balmain Library Members have access to all Databases we subscribe to although some databases are restricted to use in the library. You need to use your library card and password to log in.

 

Academic Search Elite

With full text for more than 2,100 journals, 1700 of which are peer-reviewed, this database will become the first point of call for all students seeking high quality information.

 

Alexander Street Press

Music online which includes Classical Music Library, Contemporary World Music, Jazz music library, Smithsonian Global Sound for Libraries and American song.

 

Ancestry Library Edition

This genealogy research tool is available within the library only.   

It provides patrons with instant access to a wide range of unique resources for genealogical and historical research.  With more than 1.5 billion names in over 4,000 databases, Ancestry Library Edition includes records from the United States Census; military records; court, land and probate records; vital and church records; directories; passenger lists and more!  These collections are continuously expanding, with new content added every business day. Currently only available in the library.

A 'Facts on File' database, which explores the pre-modern world with in-depth focus on Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome, Africa, Europe,the Americas and Asia.

 

ANZ Newsstand  ProQuest             

A selection of full-text newspapers and newswires from Australia and New Zealand covering regional and international topics. 

  

Austlit  

AustLit indexes and describes Australian literature published in a range of print and electronic information sources. It also makes available selected critical articles and creative writing in full text.

 

The Australia/NZ Reference Centre

This database combines Australasian and global magazines, newspapers, newswires, encyclopaedias, images, biographies and reference books to create a superb collection of regional full text content. With over 530 full-text titles and a high quality title list, this database provides local and global perspectives on current events, business, religion, sports, technology and many other subjects.   

 

Australia/New Zealand Points of View Reference Centre

Australia/New Zealand Points of View Reference Centre is a full-text database designed to provide students with a series of essays that present multiple sides of a current issue. The database contains 100 topics, each with an overview (objective background/description), point (argument) and counterpoint (opposing argument). For each topic, this database also offers a Guide to Critical Analysis, which helps the reader evaluate the controversial topics. Topics covered include: abortion, animal experimentation, climate change, cloning, freedom of speech, gay marriage, globalisation, green consumerism, nuclear energy, population growth, renewable energy, services for indigenous peoples, stem cell research, and worldwide oil supplies. Dynamic Learning Online

Please sign up using your library card.   Input your Library Card Number and then create a new account so that you can log in at anytime to where you last were.   This will provide you with simple online training solutions for teaching you how to use popular computer applications. These currently include training for the following products and areas:  Introduction to Computer Technology, Using and searching the Internet, Microsoft Office 2007, Microsoft Windows Vista, Setting up email accounts.

Green File

GreenFILE offers well-researched information covering all aspects of human impact to the environment. Its collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles includes content on global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more. The database provides indexing and abstracts for more than 384,000 records, as well as Open Access full text for more than 4,700 records.

 

Language learning with Mango Languages

  Online language learning for those wanting to study a foreign language at their own pace. The program is an interactive learning tool. There are twelve languages on offer at present, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian and Spanish. More expected soon. It also offers ESL for Spanish, Polish and Brazilian Portuguese speakers. Use your library card to log in.

 

Literary Reference Centre

This is a highly graphical interface intended for public, academic and high school libraries. The primary goal of LRC is to assist high school and undergraduate English and Humanities students with homework and research assignments of a literary nature.   

 

Masterfile Premier 

Designed specifically for public libraries, this multidisciplinary database provides full text for more than 1,730 general reference publications with full text information dating as far back as 1975. Covering virtually every subject area of general interest, MasterFILE Premier also includes nearly 500 full text reference books, 84,774 biographies, 100,554 primary source documents, andan Image Collection of 235,186 photos, maps and flags. This database is updated daily via EBSCOhost.

Full-text content of more than 100 local, regional, and national newspapers. Covers community events, schools, politics, government policies, cultural activities, local companies, state industries, and people in the community. Paid advertisements are excluded.

 

NoveList

NoveList is a fiction database that provides subject heading access, reviews, annotations, and much more for over 135,000 fiction titles. It also includes other content of interest to fiction readers, such as Author Read-alikes, What We're Reading, Book Discussion Guides, Book Talks, and Annotated Book Lists. For school media specialists and teachers there are Picture Book Extenders and articles on Teaching with Fiction.

 

Science Reference Centre

A comprehensive research database that provides easy access to a multitude of full text science-oriented content. This database contains full text for nearly 640 science
encyclopedias, reference books, periodicals, etc. Topics covered include: biology, chemistry, earth & space science, environmental science, health & medicine, history of
science, life science, physics, science & society, science as inquiry, scientists, technology and wildlife.  
 

 

Standards Australia

This database is available within the library only. 

Includes a comprehensive online collection of International and Australian standards, many with full text coverage is available. This web-based access to electronic files contains a complete collection of Australian Standards. The print facility has been restricted to allow the printing of one single screen at a time.

   

Times Digital Archive

Researchers can search through the complete digital edition of The Times (London), using keyword searching and hit-term highlighting to retrieve full facsimile images of either a specific article or a complete page. The entire newspaper is captured, with all articles, advertisements and illustrations/photos divided into categories to facilitate searching.   

 

World  Atlas
