Companion Animals

Introduced by the NSW State Government in 1998, The Companion Animals Act (the Act) is to provide for the effective and responsible care and management of companion Animals. The Companion Animals Act replaces the Dog Act 1966 and provides legislation for the identification and registration of companion animals and for the duties and responsibilities of their owners.

The Act came about in response to community expectations about the role and place of dogs and cats in society. This new environment warrants new approaches to animal management. In response, Council developed a Local Companion Animals Management Plan (LCAMP). As part of LCAMP the “Access to Open Space Strategy for Dogs” was developed. This document sets out the leash provisions for the Leichhardt Local Government Area.
