Balmain Glasshouse

balmain glasshouse imageThe Balmain Glasshouse program is coordinated by a group of dynamic volunteers who have fun finding out about plants and growing food to eat.

The Balmain Glasshouse is located next to the Balmain Library and Town Hall at 370 Darling Street, Balmain.

Members meet here every Thursday evening between 6.30 and 7.30pm.

The Balmain Glasshouse program seeks to create an inclusive place to save seeds, plant and propagate an edible garden together - to create a shared vision, to work collaboratively, build community capacity, to grow food using sustainable methods and to cultivate a pace to learn about and to experience the rewards of edible gardening.

The aims and objectives of the program are:

  • To establish and maintain an ecologically balanced and sustainable glasshouse; to grow and reproduce a diverse range of vegetables, flowers, herbs and spices.
  • To provide opportunities for formal and informal learning about propagation, planting, heritage seeds, organic gardening, natural resources, soil health, and other techniques associated with sustainable gardening and edible landscapes.
  • To promote community interest and further understanding of growing a diversity of multi-use and unusual plant varieties.
  • To develop networks with other local gardening activities and community organisations.
  • To create and foster community connection where sharing ideas and skills are encouraged.
