The Original POP in Space

The Pop In Space was a temporary community space and platform for ideas and skills share located at: 124 Marion Street, in Leichhardt.

The Pop In Space experimented with the 'pop up' phenomenon but with a community space focus. For three months during late 2013 it offered the opportunity for the arts and wider community to utilise the space for a variety of exhibitions, events, talks and activities. It was an exciting platform for people to share their passions with others, and allowed others to learn about what excites other people in their  community. It was also an open space to visit and sit at a comfy couch, read a book from the book swap area, or play a game of chess or backgammon.

Five exhibitions occurred during the three months which allowed local artists to exhibit their work in the Pop In Space.
Exhibitions included:

  • BLOOMIN' ARTS EXHIBITION
The 2013 Bloomin' Arts Exhibition has been running annually now for eight years in celebration of International Day for People with a Disabilty. It showcases a diverse range of works, offering you an affordable and distinctive shopping experience in time for Christmas. Additionally each year one artist is offered the chance to be chosen as the Bloomin' Arts Mentoree, offering the winning artist the chance to expand their professional expertise under the guidance of a Sydney College of the Arts lecturer.
  • BLOOMIN' ARTS MENTORING EXHIBITION
An exhibition of works by the three Bloomin' Arts Mentorees winners. The Bloomin' Arts Mentoring Prize is a partnership between Leichhardt Council and Sydney College of the Arts. These three artists have had the opportunity to be a part of campus life at Rozelle, and be tutored by some of the finest arts lecturers in town. Works on show were by the following Bloomin' Arts Mentoring Prize recipients:
    2010 – Kyaw Aung Zin
    2011 – Claire Hooper
    2012 – Digby Webster
  • TRANSMISSION
An exhibtion of works by local artists who also shared the common link of having previously been an Artist of the Month. The Artist of the Month webpage on Leichhardt Council's website, is dedicated to showcasing an artist each month who lives and/or works in the Leichhardt Local Government Area. It has been operating since January 2011.
Exhibition artists included: Sandra Winkworth, Digby Webster, Leonora Howlett, Selina McGrath, David Watson, Nola Diamantopoulos, Susan Baird, Sally Mowbray, David Kirk, Felicia Finlayson, Peter Griffin, Denise Lithgow, Suzy King, Martin Campbell, and Ian Thomas.
  • ORNOTHO-LOGICAL

  • ROOMIES AT POP IN SPACE
