Arts and Culture

Council recognises that the arts and culture are an important aspect of any community, and welcomes the communities involvement in cultural activities,  such as our Like Art Street Art initiatives, the arts and creative programs in our community facilities, and special events such as Flightpath, NAIDOC Week celebrations and Something Really Epic, the battle of the bands run through our Youth Council.

The suburbs in Leichhardt are home to many creative industry workers, and our Local Government Area is known for its outstanding mural art, such as the panorama at the Crescent in Annandale, Renwick Lane and the Hawthorne Canal Railway Underpass.

The Leichhardt Local Government Area has access to many art and cultural organisations. Legs on the Wall has its home in the Big Red Box in Lilyfield, and numerous small arts organisations have moved into the same precinct. Commercial galleries are found throughout the area and artist studios for hire are located in Leichhardt, Rozelle, and Balmain.

The Italian community has a wealth of social and cultural organisations located in Leichhardt, and work is under way to develop the Italian Forum Cultural Centre. The NSW Writers Centre has its home in Callan Park, alongside the Sydney College of the Arts. It is through these organisations and through the community that the Leichhardt identity, in its diversity, is formed. The link to some of these organisations is on this website under Artistic and Cultural Contacts.

In 2010 Council is developing its first ever cultural policy.  Details will be updated on the website throughout the year under the section Community Plans.

For more information, please contact Council’s Community Development & Social Planning team on (02) 9367 9220.
