Accessing and viewing Council's archives

The archival records of Leichhardt Council are held at the State Records Western Sydney Records Centre (WSRC).

Getting to the WSRC by public transport:

Catch a train to Penrith or St. Marys stations, then board a Westbus Route 790 bus. There is a bus stop at the entrance to the WSRC. At peak times throughout the day, these buses leave Penrith railway station every 15 minutes.

You can also catch the Westbus Route 780 bus from St Marys station to the University of Western Sydney and back. This bus stops on the Great Western Highway at the UWS, Werrington Campus. You can walk (approximately 5 minutes) through the grounds of the university to O'Connell St. The entrance to the WSRC is directly across from the university grounds.

There is also a taxi rank at both Penrith and St. Marys stations.

Getting there by car:

Take the M4 motorway to the Mamre Road exit. Turn right onto Mamre Road and follow to the Great Western Highway. Turn left onto the Great Western Highway and proceed to O'Connell Street. Turn left into O'Connell Street and keep going until you reach the WSRC (143 O'Connell Street).

Monday - Friday 9 am - 5 pm
Saturday 10 am - 4 pm
Sundays & Public Holidays CLOSED
The WSRC is wheelchair accessible and toilets for the disabled are provided.

Admission:

You will need to apply for a Reader's Ticket either on-line or in person at the WSRC. You will be asked to show proof of identity, in the form of documentation that confirms your name, signature and address. To apply on-line go to: www.records.nsw.gov.au/public/readersticket.htm

Facilities:

Reader's lounge equipped with a fridge and a microwave as well as complimentary tea and coffee. Lunch facilities are not provided. There are no food outlets near the WSRC. If you are planning a full day's research it is recommended you bring your lunch.

Fees:

Black & white photocopies (A4 & A3) - 45 cents per page Payment may be made by cash, cheque or credit card.

Pre-ordering records:

You may pre-order up to four original items before your visit. The records will be retrieved and held in the reading room for the day of your intended visit.

Researching the records:

The WSRC does not undertake research on your behalf. If you require research to be undertaken on your behalf WSRC will refer you to the organisations that maintain lists of professional researchers.

If you intend to publish a work that includes copies of or extracts from State archives you will need to obtain the permission of State Records.
