Healthy Ageing Plan coverThe development of a Healthy Ageing Plan was an action included in both the Community and Cultural Plan (2011) and Leichhardt 2025+ (2013). Action research was undertaken alongside community engagement, and specialist consultants were engaged to assist in writing the Plan. Council resolutions have guided the development of the plan. Seniors Council have had input to the plan at all key milestones.

The State Government requires local government to plan for ageing populations, and has issued the NSW Ageing strategy. Local Government NSW has developed resources to assist Councils in planning for older populations. At the same time, State and Commonwealth funding models for Aged Care and Disability Services are undergoing significant change, with impacts on service providers to these sectors, and on individuals receiving the services, not yet fully understood. Internationally, governments are addressing the strategic planning and policy issues posed by the increasing numbers of people living longer.

Leichhardt Council has undertaken planning aligned with Council’s commitment, and the community’s vision in Leichhardt 2025+, for Council and Community to work together for a sustainable, liveable and connected community, and at the same time, utilised planning models drawing from Australian and international experience to best plan ahead for, and with, our ageing population.

The Health Ageing Plan provides strategic direction for Council and the community on planning which considers our ageing population. The Healthy Ageing Plan emphasises collaborate strategic planning across all sectors, strong partnerships with the community, and will guide innovative programming across all Key Service Areas of Leichhardt Council.
